What are the Common Problems with Security Barriers and Gates?
- Mechanism not working: If your mechanism has stopped working, you should call a security company for repairs.
- Sensor blocked: If your sensor is blocked, the gate may not function properly.
- Problem with fob: The problem may be with your fob, not the gate itself.
Why is it Important to Maintain Your Security Gates?
Security gates are classified as ‘industrial machinery’ by law. As you can see from the HSE statement below, you have a responsibility to maintain your security gate and are liable for any damage or injury the gate causes. For example, if you fail to maintain your gate, the mechanism is not maintained and the gate dysfunctions, you are responsible for any potential damage.
“Powered gates forming parts of workplaces or in common parts of residential complexes will be subject to health and safety law. Owners, occupiers, landlords and managing agents will have on-going responsibilities for the safety of all users and all those who may encounter the gate.”
If there is a problem with your gate, we recommend contacting a professional security company to complete the repairs. As you can see, the person completing work on a powered gate is responsible for its function.
“Those undertaking work on powered gates are responsible for what they do, and for leaving the machinery in a safe condition, which may include switching off and isolating from power if it needs to be left in an unsafe condition. Substantial modifications may require re-assessment, in some cases re-CE marking by the person undertaking the modifications.”

Security Barriers and Gates Checklist
Check the power. Has it been disrupted or switched off? If so, turn it back on.
If using a fob, check the function of fob. You could have a faulty fob, not gate.
A simple way to confirm this is to try another fob. To repair this, we fix the fob, not the gate.
Check for any obstruction near the gate including items blocking the sensors such as parcels, rocks or other items.
Check safety sensors for dust or condensation and they could be disrupting a sensor.
Check the general condition of the gate including the hinges and structure.
If your gate still isn’t working.
